What is the Peace of God
The peace of God is experiencing an inner calm in the middle of a life that feels like nothing but chaos.
In the Greek New Testament, the word often translated as “calm” is “ἡσυχία” (hesychia), which refers to a state of quietness, tranquility, or stillness. It denotes a peaceful condition free from disturbance or turmoil. This word is used in passages such as Mark 4:39, where Jesus rebukes the wind and says to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The word “still” here is translated from the Greek “πεφίμωσο” (pephimoso), derived from the root word “φιμόω” (phimoó), which means “to muzzle” or “to make silent.” It implies bringing to a state of calmness or quietness.
In the Hebrew Old Testament, the concept of calmness or tranquility is often conveyed by words such as “שָׁקַט” (shaqat) and “שָׁלוֹם” (shalom). “שָׁקַט” (shaqat) means to be quiet or still, emphasizing a state of peace or rest. “שָׁלוֹם” (shalom) denotes peace, completeness, or wholeness, encompassing a sense of harmony and well-being. These words are used in various passages throughout the Old Testament to describe God’s peace and the tranquility that comes from His presence.
Therefore, when we face difficult times and uncertainty in life, the peace of God is like a soothing melody playing softly in the background. It’s a gentle assurance that everything will be alright, even when things seem chaotic or uncertain.
Just as a comforting melody can calm your mind and lift your spirits, the peace of God brings a sense of calm that no one and nothing can bring. It’s a hope that sustains you through life’s ups and downs. It’s like having an inner sanctuary where you can find rest and renewal, knowing that you are held securely in God’s love and care.
Finding peace in God is a deep sense of calm and assurance that comes from trusting in God’s love and guidance. Even when everything around us feels chaotic, His peace is like a steady anchor, keeping us grounded and hopeful.
In John 14:27 (ESV), it says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
This verse encourages us to turn to God in prayer and gratitude and promises that His peace, which is beyond our comprehension, will protect our hearts and minds.
What Does it Mean to Find Peace in God
We can find peace in God in our everyday lives if we search for the Father’s heart and do what we do unto the Lord. As Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
Here are a few examples of what it can look like to find peace in God:
Letting Go of Worry: Imagine you have a big presentation at work, and you’re feeling anxious about it. Instead of letting worry consume you, you take a moment to pray and surrender your concerns to God. Trusting that He is with you and will give you the strength you need, you approach the presentation with a sense of peace, knowing that the outcome is ultimately in His hands.
Forgiving Others: Suppose someone has wronged you, and you’re holding onto feelings of anger and resentment. Rather than harboring bitterness, you choose to forgive them, following Jesus’ example of love and forgiveness. As you release the burden of unforgiveness, you experience the peace of God flooding your heart, replacing bitterness with compassion and understanding.
Finding Joy in Simple Moments: Picture yourself spending time with loved ones, enjoying a leisurely walk in nature, or savoring a delicious meal. In these everyday moments of joy and gratitude, you recognize God’s presence and blessings in your life. By being mindful and appreciative of these simple pleasures, you cultivate a deeper sense of peace and contentment, knowing that God is with you in both the ordinary and extraordinary moments of life.
Seeking Guidance Through Prayer: Let’s say you’re facing a difficult decision and unsure of which path to take. Instead of relying solely on your own wisdom, you turn to God in prayer, seeking His guidance and wisdom. As you quiet your heart and listen for His voice, you experience a sense of clarity and peace, trusting that God will direct your steps according to His perfect plan.
Resting in God’s Promises: Finally, imagine you’re going through a challenging season of life filled with uncertainties and trials. Despite the storms raging around you, you cling to God’s promises found in Scripture—promises of His faithfulness, provision, and unfailing love. As you anchor your faith in His promises, you discover a deep and abiding peace that sustains you through every trial and hardship.
In each of these examples, finding peace in God involves actively trusting in His love, surrendering to His will, and living in alignment with His truth. It’s about recognizing His presence in every aspect of life and allowing His peace to permeate your heart and mind, even in the midst of life’s challenges.

How Do We Find Peace in God
Finding peace with God is a journey marked by sincerity, humility, and faith. It begins with acknowledging our need for reconciliation with Him, recognizing that we have fallen short of His standards and have sinned. This realization prompts us to seek forgiveness through genuine repentance, admitting our faults and shortcomings before Him. No matter what we are stressed or anxious about.
Next, finding peace with God involves accepting the gift of salvation offered through Jesus Christ. Understanding that Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, we place our trust in Him as our Savior and acknowledge Him as the only way to reconciliation with God. This step requires a surrender of our will to God’s as we commit to following Jesus and living according to His teachings.
Prayer plays a crucial role in finding peace with God. Through heartfelt prayer, we communicate with Him, expressing our gratitude for His love and mercy, confessing our sins, and seeking His guidance and strength. Prayer fosters intimacy with God and deepens our relationship with Him, allowing His peace to permeate our hearts and minds.
Furthermore, finding peace with God involves cultivating a life of obedience and righteousness. As we grow in our relationship with Him, we strive to align our thoughts, words, and actions with His will, seeking to honor Him in all that we do. This may involve letting go of sinful habits, forgiving others, and pursuing a life of love, compassion, and service.
Ultimately, finding peace with God is a continuous journey of faith characterized by trust, surrender, and perseverance. It’s about embracing God’s love and grace, accepting His forgiveness, and walking in obedience to His Word. As we abide in Him and seek His presence daily, His peace fills our hearts and sustains us through life’s trials and challenges, anchoring us in His unfailing love and goodness.
